FAQ: Psilocybin Therapy in Colorado

(Also known as Natural Medicine or Mushrooms)

What is Psilocybin therapy?

Psilocybin therapy involves the controlled and supervised use of the psychedelic compound psilocybin, found in certain species of mushrooms, as a therapeutic tool. It is typically administered in conjunction with psychotherapy sessions to address various mental health conditions.

Is psilocybin therapy legal in Colorado?

The Natural Medicine Health Act of 2022, a citizen-initiated measure related to the use of certain plants or fungi for people 21 years of age and older, was approved by Colorado voters in November of 2022. In May 2023, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed  SB23-290: Natural Medicine Regulation And Legalization into law, which clarifies and sets the regulatory framework for a regulated natural medicine program in Colorado.

Can I participate in Psilocybin therapy?

Not just yet. State and local government agencies are developing rules and regulations, including licensure requirements for employees, facilities, and practitioners. The rulemaking sessions will run through July 2024 and are open to the public.

Is Global Behavioral Healthcare licensed to provide Psilocybin therapy?

The Division of Professions and Occupations will begin taking applications for natural medicine facilitators no later than December 31, 2024. The timeline for when licenses will be issued has not been determined yet.

What mental health conditions can Psilocybin therapy treat?

Research into the therapeutic potential of Psilocybin is ongoing. However, early studies suggest it may be effective in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and addiction. However, it is essential to note that Psilocybin therapy is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and its effectiveness can vary depending on individual factors.

What are the risks associated with Psilocybin therapy?

While Psilocybin therapy shows promise as a treatment option, it is not without risks. Psilocybin can induce intense psychological experiences, which may be challenging or distressing for some individuals. Additionally, there is a potential for adverse reactions, including anxiety, paranoia, and psychosis, particularly in those with a predisposition to or history of mental health disorders. Therefore, Psilocybin therapy should only be undertaken under the guidance of trained professionals in a controlled setting.

Where can I get more information about the timeline for Psilocybin?
